FSMA Spotlights: Faecal Sludge Management in Low Income Settlements of the Kampala District in Uganda

In this webinar, FSMA Spotlights: Faecal Sludge Management in Low-Income Settlements of the Kampala District in Uganda

Kampala, the capital city of Uganda is experiencing rapid population and economic growth. The provision of basic services including adequate sanitation for the city population has not kept pace with these developments. The municipal sewerage network serves less than 10% of the city's population leaving the vast majority (Over 90%) reliant on onsite sanitation which is mostly unimproved. Only about half of the faecal sludge from these onsite facilities is safely collected and treated.

Kampala has a population of 3,652,000 million people and day time population of 5,820,000 million people. Mostly these come to work and go back to the nearest areas of Kampala every day. Kampala has an estimated 478,400 households.

Kaka Cesspool Services operates in Kampala to ensure that households and institutions are using a healthy clean sanitation facility by collecting faecal sludge and safely transporting it to the treatment plants. Kaka Cesspool Services serves an average total of 102 households per month. This is because it operates 1 cesspool truck of 3,700 liters and 1 tricycle for gulper emptying. We concentrate our operations mainly in slums and low-income settlements where the demand for emptying services is greatly needed but the issue of affordability, appropriate technology, and site accessibility comes in creating a big danger.

The pit latrines in these areas contain a large amount of solid waste and are difficult to access for emptying, ultimately resulting in filled fits. The most used method for emptying such pits is the gulper technology. A gulper is a mechanical sludge emptying device similar to a borehole hand pump that has been designed for pit emptying in densely populated informal areas not accessible by vacuum trucks.

To improve fecal sludge management in these low-income settlements there is a need for better technology and equipment. Kaka Cesspool service seeks to partner with investors/partners so that it betters service provision in these areas.

The presentation will be followed by a Q&A discussion.
