In this FSMA Spotlights webinar we'll take a closer look at the Independent Sanitation Workers Cooperative and its role in strengthening the livelihoods of sanitation workers in Nepal.
Sanitation workers are the backbone of the sanitation system. Their services are essential for the smooth running of a city. In Nepal, sanitation work is often undertaken by people from lower castes or very poor communities. With the aim of improving the livelihood of sanitation workers, the Independent Sanitation Workers Cooperative Ltd. was formed. The cooperative formation and operation were carried out democratically through the active involvement of the sanitation worker community. The board was gender-inclusive and included members from lower castes. Through the cooperative network, several members found employment, received loans, and received relief packages during the Covid-19 lockdown.
The webinar will present the cooperative's main initiatives and milestones and also highlight its Covid-response activities, which had a significant impact on supporting sanitation workers during the pandemic.
As always, there will be time to ask questions after the presentation.
