FSMA Spotlights: A brief contextualization of the sanitation panorama in Brazil, and the critical role of FSM in order to achieve the targets of full-service coverage.

In this webinar, FSMA Spotlights: A brief contextualization of the sanitation panorama in Brazil, and the critical role of FSM in order to achieve the targets of full-service coverage.

This webinar will present relevant background and overview of the current sanitation scenario in Brazil, correlating the deficits and existing conditions with the importance of structuring strategic policies and services towards efficient fecal sludge management.

Brazil still presents a critical deficit in sanitation coverage, with only 42.6% of domestic wastewater being collected and treated (ANA 2017). While the existing service provisions are mainly concentrated in most populated urban centers, the rural areas, urban poor, and less populated municipalities are often unattended, largely due to technical and financial restrictions of centralized systems to such contexts. While a large share of the national population relies on onsite sanitation solutions, roughly 31% of its population, the lack of endorsement from government, regulatory agencies, and service suppliers to FSM (as a form of adequate service provision) leads to poorly constructed and maintained systems, and to non-managed sludge chains.

Besides disclosing the critical coverage numbers and their challenges, the webinar will also present a few relevant ongoing efforts and potential pathways to improve sanitation service coverage.

The presentation will be followed by a Q&A discussion.

    Consultant at SAO Saneamento

Tomaz, an environmental engineer (2012) with a Msc degree in Sanitary engineering from IHE Delft (2017), works as a consultant for water and sanitation systems, specialized in strategic planning, design and technical studies for sanitation processes and resource recovery. In the last seven years has undertaken several projects in Brazil and other countries, comprising: Municipal and regional sanitation masterplans; Centralized and decentralized wastewater treatment plants; Fecal sludge treatment plants and service design; Integrated urban drainage systems; Technical studies for resource recovery from sewage; Technical trainings and workshops on integrated sanitation; and other related activities. Since 2020 has also been running an NGO called Saneamento Inclusivo (https://saneamentoinclusivo.org.br/), with the purpose of developing and diffusing adequate and feasible solutions for sanitation in rural and urban poor communities, developing studies, tools and pilot projects, approaching the entire sanitation service chain.
