FSMA Spotlights: Let's talk sh*t - The New generation of non-sewage sanitation

In this webinar, FSMA Spotlights: Let's talk sh*t - The New generation of non-sewage sanitation

Today, we're meeting with Birger "Burger" Lundgren, founder and software entrepreneur who kicked off The Non-profit Sanitation Ambassadors in sunny South Africa.

Birger realised that not many people were looking at the big picture of sanitation. So, inspired by the likes of IKEA and LEGO, they came up with the WaSH Centre – a one-stop-shop for all things sanitation, covering construction, a cool experience, waste collection, support, safe treatment, and resource recovery.

Now, let's talk water. They're all about providing a top-notch WaSH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) solution that's a "flush and forget" experience for students and teachers. And get this, they're doing it with minimal water, thanks to rainwater collection. Each flush is just 100ml, and you only need 200ml to wash your hands.

Together with SLU - The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, they worked on a cost-effective method to safely treat human waste and transform it into fertiliser for agriculture.

After three years of research and development, they're finally launching this revolutionary solution. They've been testing it out in South African schools, and also setting up "The Ablution Factory" in Cape Town. Why? To create local jobs and assemble WaSH Centers in other places and countries, all to keep costs down.

Their motto is as bold and simple: Eat, Sh*t, Grow, and Repeat. So buckle up, as we flush away the old and grow into a cleaner, greener future!

Birger “Burger” Lundgren is a Swedish serial entrepreneur and visionary investor who moved
to Cape Town, South Africa two decades ago. With an extensive track record of innovation and
business acumen, Birger has left a mark on the global tech and sanitation landscape.

As the Co-founder of Optimizly/EPiserver Africa, a leading web software company, and
StreamServe, a software powerhouse that was acquired by Open Text (NASDAQ: OTEX) in 2010,
In 2017, Birger founded Scandinavian Water and Sanitation with a mission to address water issues
in Cape Town, starting with the introduction of a cutting-edge Swedish-designed low-flush toilet.
Yet, his dedication to this cause led him to realisation - that the challenges in sanitation were far
    more extensive than initially perceived.

Over the past four years, Birger has directed his efforts towards developing a sustainable sanitation
solution, culminating in a closed-loop system tailored for schools in collaboration with The Swedish
University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) a reinvented, full sanitation service chain.

In 2021, Birger took his commitment to the next level by establishing the non-profit organisation,
Sanitation Ambassadors. This initiative embodies his unwavering dedication to advancing global
sanitation efforts, aiming to create a world where dignified sanitation is accessible to all.

A straightforward statement that encapsulates Birger Lundgren's dedication to sustainable
sanitation is Eat, Sh*t, Grow and Repeat.
